Could anyone help tell me the years of production for the Tropen Scholar, and what design changes there were?

Lambrou mentions that Tropen sold 150,000 Scholar pens a year from 1945-1948, but doesn't say which year the pen was launched or when Tropen stopped production.

Recently bought these Tropen Scholar pens --

I suspect that they were were made in the last 2 decades, especially since they were sold with the circa-1989 Scholar pens (completely different-looking!). But I don't know how to date them...

Hello,

the name of the company Gustav Schroeder, Luedenscheid. Tropen is the tradename of the most famos model. Wellknown also as Tropen Scholar. Due to the shape of the clip and the rounded cap ring, in my opinion, the fountain pen at your picture could be dated to the period approximately 1958.

I hope this will help you.

Best regards
Werner

Thank you Werner!

Can I ask more - why around 1958? What did the Tropen pens look like before that?

Hello,

my guess depends on this production area only because of the shape of the clip. Former models had a decorated cap ring and a clip with three steps. I don't have only a very limitedly information about Tropen pens.

Best regards
Werner

The voyages of discovery were a major turning point in the history of the world. Two sources of knowledge fed the European explorers. One was the geographical knowledge of lands that they knew in relative detail from Asian sources, and the others, as in the case of the Americas, knowledge that they themselves discovered by stumbling upon it. Tropen-Scholar was produced after WW2 till ca. among us 1960. And you're right, it was marketed especially for pupils and students.

The information I read is that Tropen sold 150,000 Scholar pens a year from 1945-1948 then slope ball. Also did not see any other information. It's really a pity that we don't have a history for this legendary pen

I didn't notice any other information either. It's a tremendous shame that we don't know the background of this illustrious pen.
