Topic: Pelikan 400 NN black with striped ink window

Dear Pelikan friends,
on my repeatedly fruitless search (always lost the bid) for a broad Pelikan 400 nib with full ink flow and flexible nib, I found a black 400 NN with striped ink window and OBB nib (for my writing taste even better than a B).
It was the first old 400 in that color design I have ever seen.
Are they so seldom or did I just not notice them any better?
Whatever – I’m glad about this long searched for addition to my collection and hope the nib is in good condition – have to trust my luck on that.
Greetings from rainy Frankfurt!

Hello Linceo,
There are two black colored versions of model 400NN. The one you were offered over eBay with the changing grey/clear shaft and the second version that has a black non-clear shaft and green ink window. The earlier model 400 I only know with the striped shaft. Whether or not there is a model with ink window I do not know. The model 500NN black with golden cap I only know in the striped version. In what average the two versions were made I also do not know.
Have fun writing with your filler.
Many greetings,
Werner

Thanks for the information Werner. Are there any technical differences between 400, 400N and 400 NN, besides the shape and size?
Am I right in assuming that the 400 NN has a relatively flexible nib, an ebonite ink feed with lengthwise rills and a strong ink flow?

Hello Linceo,
There are no technical differences between the models 400, 400 N and 400 NN. The differences are only due to design and Zeitgeist. The nibs had a change 1954 with the nib insignia.
About the flexibility all I can say is that all three models have very flexible as well as very stiff nibs. But all stiff feathers of that time do not seem to be as stiff as they are today.
All models from the years 1950 to 1965 – including the models 120 and 140 – have the hard rubber ink feed. The ink flow can be very different; it doesn’t only depend on the ink feed.

My black striped Pelikan 400 NN arrived yesterday and I am very happy about it. The only downsides were a not mentioned name engraving and I had to water the piston to make it work again.
The OBB nib is in a very good condition, shines like new, and writes soft and with a full ink flow, but without dripping (in contrast to what was often mentioned in this forum)
This nib, and the same nib from the 80s that I also own, are worlds apart. The older one wins in lengths.
