Best Practices for Preserving Vintage Fountain Pen Inks – How Do You Store Yours?

Post by roryelila68 » October 4th, 2025, 5:10 am

Hello everyone,

I recently acquired a few bottles of vintage fountain pen inks, some dating back to the 1980s, and I want to make sure I store them properly to avoid spoilage or changes in color/flow. I’ve read a few general guidelines—like keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat—but I’d love to hear the community’s real-world experience.

Some questions I’m particularly curious Incredibox about:
  • Do you refrigerate old inks, or is room temperature always safer?
  • Have you noticed certain brands aging better than others?
  • What’s your approach if an ink starts to develop sediment or a strange smell?
  • For those of you who actively use vintage inks, do you dilute them, filter them, or leave them as-is?
I believe sharing practical storage and usage tips could be very valuable, not only for collectors but also for anyone experimenting with older bottles.

Looking forward to your insights—thanks in advance for helping a fellow enthusiast preserve these little pieces of writing history!

Best regards!
