In 2001 the Laguna II, an executive saloon that was designed to be a 'lifestyle vehicle", went into production. It was a time of great innovation with numerous new technology features which helped customers take advantage of their vehicle to the fullest.
The occupants still had to use the keys to open and shut their doors. This was a huge stumbling block for many people and Renault engineers were determined to fix it.
They decided to integrate a contactless card in their vehicles and to develop an application that would allow drivers to open and start their cars by simply using their hands. The card key can now be found in two of three Renault vehicles. It's either located in the ignition barrel or on the centre console the car will be unlocked when the card approaches and lock automatically when it is removed. This is an original Renault remote control card (without blade). It is supplied individually clam packed and ready to programme using Abrites diagnostics for Renault/ Dacia software with the ProTAG programmer.

The hands-free card was initially launched in 2001 on the Laguna II saloon, which was designed to embody the 'lifestyle' car of the 21st century. However, despite a detailed design brief based on over 6,000 customer surveys that looked at their lifestyles, habits and expectations, Renault ran out of time to create prototypes and test every possible scenarios for use.
Bernard Dumondel was the product leader for Laguna II at the time. He used his hotel room key to unlock his car. He believed that the car key could be made with the same magnetic strip used for the key.
In the years to follow, the card was hailed an innovative invention and is now on two of three Renault vehicles. While smartphones seem to be on the verge of replacing it, Renault has chosen to utilize these new technologies without letting the hands-free card fall off the radar.
The keyless entry system
The hands free card of Renault was a revolutionary piece of technology when it first came out 20 years ago. Its exterior is still the same but the inside technology has undergone a few upgrades to make it more user-friendly and less difficult to hack.
It's not possible to use it from outside to unlock doors or start the car until the driver has activated it. That's because radio signal antennas "around" the car are designed to determine the presence of the key outside or inside the car. The key will still work from a distance to turn on the car's ignition but not to unlock the doors, and that's to protect you.
The second aspect is that the wireless remote control transmissions of the system utilize a rolling code. This reduces the chance of security being compromised by someone who intercepts and retransmits the control message to gain access, but isn't a guarantee of avoiding the possibility completely. [1]
